DURHAM, N.C. - The third-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team rallied for three goals in the second half Monday night to overcome 21st-ranked Duke 3-2 before 750 fans at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils had gone up by two goals in the first half, both by All-America midfielder Sherrill Kester on breakaways. Ironically, Kester's goals would be the only two shots Duke would take the entire evening.
For most of the night Duke junior goalkeeper Isis Dallas kept the Tar Heels at bay, making 13 saves overall and seven in the first half on nine Tar Heel shots. But in the second half Carolina was able to finally punch some balls past Dallas, scoring on its 13th, 14th and 17th shots of the night.
Junior forward Meredith Florance scored the first two goals for Carolina. At 57:22, she took a pass in the box from junior midfielder Raven McDonald and beat Dallas to cut the Duke lead to 2-1. Just 49 seconds later, Florance scored again, this time unassisted, on a shot from 15 yards out. Suddenly, the momentum had swung Carolina's way.
All-America midfielder Lorrie Fair then scored the game-winner for the Tar Heels as she scored on a direct kick at the 75:53 mark. It is the third successive game in which Fair has scored the game-winning goal for UNC. It was also her fourth goal of the season, three of them game-winners.
Carolina will have four days off before it plays ninth-ranked Virginia Friday at 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. Monday's win was Carolina seventh victory in a row and lifted the Tar Heels to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Blue Devils fell to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in the ACC.
The victory was the first time that Carolina has overcome a two-goal deficit to win a game since a 3-2 win over Santa Clara on September 24, 1993 at the Saint Mary's Fall Women's Soccer Classic in Moraga, Calif.
