CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- North Carolina's women's soccer team remained unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday night, defeating ninth-ranked Virginia 2-0 before a crowd of 1,044 at Klockner Stadium on the UVA campus. The win was the eighth in a row for Carolina since losing a 1-0 decision to top-ranked Santa Clara on September 24.
The third-ranked Tar Heels improved to 14-2 on the season with the win, 5-0 in the ACC. Virginia fell to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.
Goals by sophomore forward Anne Remy and senior forward Lorrie Fair lifted the Tar Heels to the victory. It was the fourth successive game in which Fair has scored a goal. Remy put the Tar Heels on the board just 11:11 into the match. Junior forward Meredith Florance served a through ball that Remy took in stride and shot to the left of Virginia starting goalkeeper Julie Harris.
Remy was also involved in the Tar Heels' second goal of the match. She served a cross which found the head of Fair in the box at the 58:31 mark. Fair's header eluded Virginia goalie Megan Boehm, who had entered the game at halftime.
The Tar Heels took 12 shots to seven for the Cavaliers. UNC starting goalkeeper Jenni Branam played 88 minutes of the match, making one save and blanking the Wahoos. Harris recorded the only save for the Cavs. Carolina had six corner kicks to zero for UVA.
UNC will now travel to College Park, Md. where the Tar Heels will play the Maryland Terrapins (8-7-1, ACC 3-1-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field. Carolina will then close out the 1999 regular season by playing host to 11th-ranked Wake Forest (10-4, ACC 3-2) on Sunday, October 31 at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. Virginia plays host to Wake Forest this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.
Carolina has now won 28 matches in its women's soccer history against Virginia without a loss.
