
No. 5 Field Hockey Falls To No. 2 Maryland, 2-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina field hockey team lost a heart breaker 2-1 to second ranked Maryland Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels move to 12-4 overall (2-2 ACC), while the Terrapins improve to 16-1 overall (4-0 ACC). The fifth-ranked Tar Heels play again on Sunday, hosting Richmond in their final home game of the season.
Carolina opened the scoring with a goal by Abby Martin with 11:27 remaining in the first half. Erin Cox and Holly Huff assisted Martin on the goal which was scored on Carolina's third penalty corner attempt of the half. The score remained 1-0 until late in the second half when Maryland's Carla Tagliente scored on a rebound to tie the score with only 1:39 left in the game. North Carolina out-shot Maryland 6-0 in the first overtime, but couldn't find the net. Maryland finally ended the game with 5:29 left in the second overtime with a breakaway goal by Caroline Walker.
Despite the loss, UNC Coach Karen Shelton was very pleased with the team's play. "I feel this is the best we've played all season," said Shelton. "This game has made us better, stronger, and mentally tougher. We know we can play with the best." Carolina midfielder Carrie Lingo added, "This was a major step for our team. We now know how well we can play."
Sunday's game is set for 1p.m. at Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels will face Richmond for the fourth time in team history and lead the series 3-0.
