North Carolina men’s lacrosse head coach Joe Breschi announced the addition of offensive coordinator Jon Thompson to the Tar Heels’ coaching staff in June 2023.
“We are excited to welcome Jon and his family to the Carolina Lacrosse community,” said Breschi. “Jon is smart, innovative, and experienced in building a vision for players to play with relentless confidence within the offense. He’s an outstanding relationship builder with his athletes, who brings passion and energy both on and off the field, and I’m excited to see the positive impact he has on our young men for years to come.”
Thompson arrives in Chapel Hill after serving as the offensive coordinator at Air Force the past three seasons. In July of 2022, Thompson was promoted to associate head coach of the Falcons.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with Coach Breschi and the wonderful student-athletes at North Carolina,” Thompson said. “Coach Breschi and I share a common bond over our passion for positivity, enthusiasm, and infectious energy, and I look forward to the future working with Joe and the tremendous young men at UNC."
Under Thompson’s leadership, the Falcon offense increased its scoring average and shooting percentage in each of his three seasons at Air Force. In 2023, the unit broke the program’s single season scoring average, on their way to nationally ranked victories over Denver and Jacksonville. Thompson played an instrumental part in developing the reigning ASUN Player of the Year, Brandon Dodd, who posted back-to-back seasons of 75-plus point showings in 2022 and 2023.
Off the field, Thompson was critical in mentoring the program’s student-athletes with performance enhancement, mental skill development, and mental fitness as it relates to sport performance.
Prior to arriving in Colorado Springs, Thompson served as the head coach at Amherst for 10 seasons. During his time at Amherst, Thompson and the Mammoth won 125 games, as the program reached the Division III NCAA Championship in 2019. Thompson began his head coaching career at Colby, leading the program for two seasons (2009-10).
After a four-year playing career at Brown, the 2003 USILA All-America honoree returned to the Bears’ coaching staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2006 season, where he spent three years on staff. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Thompson worked as the offensive coordinator at Springfield in 2005, while playing professionally with the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse.
A native of Freeport, Maine, Thompson graduated from Brown University with his bachelor's degree in sports psychology in 2003, and his master's degree in sports psychology from Springfield College in 2016.
