Men's Soccer Drops Final Exhibition Match, 2-1, On Late Winner By Maryland

The University of North Carolina men's soccer team finished off its exhibition season wth a 2-1 defeat at Maryland on Thursday. The Heels and Terps are two highly-touted teams heading into the 2026 regular season, and the match was a strong contest for both sides to finish off exhibition season. The Heels will open their regular season next Thursday when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on No. 5 Georgetown at 7:30 p.m.
Maryland got on the board early, but the two sides exchanged chances throughout the remainder of the first 45', where the match stood at 1-0 Terps. The Heels were on the front foot for most of the second half, hunting an equalizer that came in the 73' when Riley Berge headed home a lovely Luca Nikolai cross. But, Maryland managed to blast one home in the 83' to give the Terps the 2-1 win.
The Heels will play two road games to open the regular season with a trip to Memphis on Monday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. after the Georgetown match. Then, Carolina will play its home opener on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts VCU.
