Track And Field Welcomes Back Scott Houston As Assistant Coach

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Tar Heel letterwinner and pole vault great, Scott Houston returns home to Chapel Hill as North Carolina Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, Chris Miltenberg announced Houston as assistant coach.

"I am so excited to bring Scott and his family home to Chapel Hill to coach our pole vaulters. He is undoubtedly one of the best pole vault coaches in the country, and his results over the last several years at High Point have been truly phenomenal," said Miltenberg. "He has proven he can develop world-class pole vaulters and is now being sought out by athletes from all over the globe. Scott knows UNC better than anyone, and we both believe Carolina has all the elements to build one of the most elite pole vault groups in the US. I know his leadership will have a huge impact on our entire program beyond just our vaulters. Â We are excited to get to work! Welcome home, Scott, Megan, and Zoe!"Â

A standout pole vaulter for Carolina from 2008-12, Scott returns to Chapel Hill after serving as the pole vault coach at High Point since 2015. Under his tutelage with the Panthers, Houston developed 13 All-Americans as well as top finishers in the NCAA Men's and Women's championships. From 2021-26, he guided 18 men's and women's pole vaulters to NCAA Indoor and Outdoor finals.

Establishing success in the Big South, Houston developed 36 individual conference champions in pole vault while also assisting with 14 conference champions in the decathlon/heptathlon.

Prior to his time in High Point, Houston spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Indiana, working with the pole vaulters and multi-event athletes.

On the international stage, Houston coached 2025 USA Champion Austin Miller to the pole vault crown and has guided seven Olympic Trial qualifiers.

A world-class pole vaulter himself, the 2018 USA Indoor Pole Vault Champion ranked 10th in the world in the pole vault in 2018. A three-time Team USA member from 2018-22, Houston competed at 18 USA Senior National Championships.

As a student-athlete at Carolina, Houston posted the fifth-best indoor pole vault mark in UNC history and was the third-place finisher in the pole vault at the ACC Championships in 2009.Â

Houston earned his B.A. in Exercise and Sport science – Sport Administration from North Carolina in 2012 and an M.S. in Kinesiology – Sport Management from Indiana in 2013.
