Baseball Runs Away From UNCW For 14-5 Win
April 15, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Another stellar start from Jackson Rose and a healthy dose of early offense helped Carolina baseball pick up a comfortable 14-5 win over UNCW on Tuesday night in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 3 Tar Heels (31-6-1) scored seven runs in the first two innings to put any concerns of a look-ahead game to bed quickly with a big weekend series looming on the horizon. Head coach Scott Forbes' program is an impressive 18-1-1 in non-conference contests so far this season.
Â
Three straight walks in the bottom of the first loaded the bases for Erik Paulsen, who kicked off the scoring with a sac-fly that brought home Gavin Gallaher. Then Cooper Nicholson brought in the rest with a home run on a 3-0 count that pinged off the score board. Eighth of the year for Nicholson, the blast brought him level with Gallaher for the team lead.
Â
It never looked like a contest from that point on, as Carolina improved to 19-0 when scoring in the first inning.
Â
A steady stream of offense picked back up in the later innings, sparked by the first career triple for Jadyn Nunez. A well struck ball beat past the diving Seahawks' outfielder in right and found the corner, scoring Colin Hynek from first.
Â
It was a difficult night for UNCW, who recorded five errors that added four unearned runs to their tally. A four-run seventh was the lone bright spot for a team that saw 21 different players take the field including eight pitchers.
Â
UNC responded to the four spot from UNCW with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Macon Winslow's two-RBI double kicked off a five run, four hit frame that brought nine to the plate.
Â
Jackson Rose got the start for the second straight midweek and threw another gem in picking up his third win of the season. The true freshman lefty went 5.0 frames of one run ball and picked up a career-high eight strikeouts along the way. It was the second most Ks by a Carolina starter this year, behind only Jason DeCaro's nine against Notre Dame.
Â
Cameron Padgett was the most impressive of the relievers, throwing the final 2.0 innings on Tuesday night with no runs allowed and just one hit surrendered.
Â
The Tar Heels will now set their sights on big time matchup over the weekend as No. 2 Georgia Tech comes to town for a top three showdown. The first game of the series is on Friday, April 17 with a first pitch time set for 6 p.m. ET.
