Pitchers Shine, But Heels Drop 2-0 Contest To Louisville On Saturday
March 21, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina baseball got excellent work on the mound but never quite kicked their offense into gear in a 2-0 loss to Louisville on Saturday afternoon in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 14 Tar Heels (19-4-1, 5-3 ACC) played a classic pitcher's duel with the Cardinals and just came out on the losing end. The two sides combined to allow just eight hits while striking out 20 in a low scoring affair.
Â
Sophomore studs Ryan Lynch and Walker McDuffie did the work for Carolina and were excellent. Lynch's only big mistake on the day gave up a double in the second that scored a run with the only other RBI coming on a sac fly in the sixth. In total it was 6.0 innings of four hit and four strikeout work that would get the job done on most days.
Â
Matthew Matthijs came in to relieve Lynch and faced one batter before exiting after a line drive hit his throwing arm. McDuffie came in cold and put together one of his best outings of 2026.
Â
In 3.0 innings, he did not surrender a hit or a run while punching out five Cardinals hitters. It was both his longest appearance and his most strikeouts in a game this season.
Â
At the plate, Carolina could only muster three hits and none of them came in the same frame. It's the fewest its in a game since only recording one in the series finale at Louisville last year. That was also the team's most recent shutout. Cardinals starting pitcher Wyatt Danilowicz, who picked up the win today, came in out of the bullpen in that contest as well.
Â
The Tar Heels will return to Boshamer Stadium on Sunday for the rubber match. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET with coverage once again on ACCNX.
