February 27, 2026 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—North Carolina's men's tennis team played its most complete match of the season and topped No. 12 Stanford, 4-2, Friday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.
The Tar Heels won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, took a 3-1 lead by winning two of the first three singles matches, then held on to clinch the upset team victory. Carolina got singles wins at the No. 1, 2 and 3 slots.
The last time Carolina beat a team ranked higher than the No. 12 Cardinal was five seasons ago, a 4-3 win over No. 9 Wake Forest in the 2021 ACC Tournament.
The match took place indoors due to rain and cold weather in Chapel Hill.
Up Next
The Tar Heels will continue ACC play on Sunday at home against No. 48 California at noon in Chapel Hill.
How it Happened — Doubles
• Roan Jones and Anthony Wright topped 12th-ranked Alex Chang and Alex Razeghi at No. 1 doubles to start the afternoon.
• Chris Xu and Logan Zapp clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Nico Godsick and Jagger Leach at No. 2. The Tar Heel pair picked up an early break to take a 2-0 lead, eventually led, 4-0, and held on for the clinching win.
• UNC's Ian Mayew and Kase Schinnerer were tied at No. 3 singles with 36th-ranked Mark Krupkin and Hudson Rivera when their match went unfinished.
How it Happened — Singles
• Zapp and Schinnerer originally were scheduled to start at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, but subbed out of the lineup and were replaced by Nick Mangiapane (at No. 5) and Wright (at No. 6).
• Xu cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles for a 2-0 Tar Heel lead, picking up the victory by breaking Samir Banerjee on a double fault on the final point.
• Godsick topped Wright in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles to make the score 2-1 Carolina.
• Mayew broke Leach to take a 6-5 lead in the second set at No. 3, then the freshman held serve to win, 6-3, 7-5, for a 3-1 UNC advantage.
• Mangiapane trailed, 5-3, in his second set but broke Razeghi to tie the score at 5-all before falling, 6-3, 7-5.
• At No. 2 singles, Jones broke Rivera to take a 3-1 lead in the third set before Rivera won the next two games to tie it at 3-3. Jones rallied and held serve for a 4-3 lead. After both players traded wins three times, it was 6-6. Jones won the tiebreaker, 7-3, to clinch the win for the Tar Heels.
Quotable
"I felt like in the first [set], I maintained a good level and it was just enough for him to give me mistakes. In the second, he wasn't giving me the same mistakes so I had to trust my game keep going every point and find a way to use my serve to get my forehand. I felt like in the end, I was slightly braver.
"Just seeing how the boys were competing [helped me regroup for the third set]. Obviously, you don't want to watch the scoreboard but you can feel the atmosphere anyway, feel the crowd get more into it. I felt like, if it came down to it, I had the edge being at home. I back myself in these situations. This is why I want to be the one out there in that moment."
