No. 25 Volleyball Sweeps Virginia Tech, 3-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 25 Carolina volleyball earned a sweep over Virginia Tech on Friday night (25-11, 25-18, 25-16) to move to a perfect 5-0 in ACC play.

It was a balanced attack for Carolina with nine different players registering at least one kill and 12 with at least one point. Laynie Smith led the team with eight kills.

UNC dominated from start to finish, the first set was all Carolina, with the Tar Heels closing the set on a 13-1 run. They finished the first frame hitting .345 and holding Virginia Tech to -.161.

The second set a tad closer but there was only one lead change in the set. Virginia Tech got a 1-0 lead and never led again. UNC raced out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. Virginia Tech was never allowed to get a rhythm with Carolina having an 83 percent sideout percentage. Carolina used that to win the set 25-18.

In the third, Carolina did much of the same, Virginia Tech got a 1-0 lead and then never led again. Tied at 3-3, UNC used a 4-0 run to separate themselves from the Hokies. They followed it with a 7-2 run to make it 15-9. The next UNC run came at 16-13, a 6-0 run made it 22-13. A Mackenzie Boyer and Meghan Clifford block ended the match.

Five different Tar Heels had more kills than Virginia Tech's leader. Lauren Schutter tied her career-high with six kills. Jackie Taylor led the way with three blocks.

The Tar Heels now head to Virginia for a Sunday matinee on ACC Network at 1 p.m.
