COLUMBIA, S.C.—North Carolina's Nick Mangiapane and Lachlan Gaskell both won a pair of matches on Thursday to advance from the qualifying draw to the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Regional at the Carolina Tennis Center.
The Tar Heel duo will continue play Friday as they try to earn spots in next month's NCAA Singles Championship in Orlando.
Gaskell, a freshman, made a strong UNC debut with a pair of straight-set wins. He defeated Furman's Finn Pollard, 7-5, 6-4, then topped Alejandro Castellanos of UNCW, 6-4, 6-4, on Thursday.
Mangiapane, a junior from Davidson, N.C., beat Wofford's Parker Mariencheck, 6-2, 6-0, in his first match before coming from behind to defeat Dario Navarro of Presbyterian in three frames, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Gaskell and Mangiapane's wins give Carolina eight participants in the singles main draw.
Meanwhile, sophomore Oliver Narbut dropped his consolation draw opener, 6-3, 6-4, to Furman's Evan Rigsby on Thursday.
The main draw in both singles and doubles will begin on Friday in Columbia. The tournament is a second opportunity this fall to earn bids to the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships, which will begin on November 17 in Orlando. Both singles finalists and the doubles champion will earn NCAA berths.
