BOONE, N.C. – North Carolina field hockey handled business on the road with a 5-0 victory over App State on Sunday afternoon in the Adcock Field Hockey Complex.
Â
The No. 10 Tar Heels (10-6, 5-2 ACC) controlled the game from the start with three first quarter goals, the most the team had scored in the opening period this year. The result improved Carolina's all-time record against App State to 14-0 with each of the last three games finishing 5-0.
Â
Veteran captain Grace Pottebaum scored the first of the three goals in the five-minute flurry that helped her team grab hold of the game. Fellow captain Charly Bruder's shot off a penalty corner was bouncing free in the circle before Pottebaum poked it home for her second career score, both coming this season.
Â
Then came the big day from Reese Anetsberger, who has been given a lot of credit by head coach Erin Matson this season for her contributions to the offense even without the goals to show for it. She was finally rewarded today with a career-high, five-point game on two goals and an assist.
Â
Her assist came on the second goal when she found Ryleigh Heck in the heart of the circle. The former Honda Award winner controlled the bouncing pass well and spun to finish in the side netting.
Â
The next two goals came from Anetsberger. For the team's third against the Mountaineers, the sophomore set up in the same spot Heck had just scored from and got one for herself.
Â
On the other side of halftime, Anetsberger got her second when she picked up a pass from Sietske Brüning at the top of the circle and slashed her way through the App State defense to lace a shot across goal into the back of the net. It was her first career multi-goal outing.
Â
The final strike of the contest came off the stick of Coco Courtright. The junior found the woodwork on a penalty corner routine for her fifth goal of the season and the fifth of the game for the Tar Heels.
Â
UNC controlled both phases of the game, outshooting App State 27-3 and winning the corners battle 13-0. Graduate senior Tessa Shahbo got the start in goal for the first time since opening weekend and made the only two saves required of her to preserve Carolina's seventh shutout of the season.
Â
The Tar Heels will prepare for the final week of the regular season when they will face off against Duke in Durham at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 30.
