Fencing Adds Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational To Schedule

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After the Penn State Invitational was canceled, fencing added the Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational to its schedule. The team will travel to Staten Island on Sunday, February 1 to face three ranked teams, with both of their respective squads ranked in the top 15 nationally.

The last time fencing competed was at the JHU Invite, where many individuals stood out. Youssef Shamel made an immediate impact in his debut meet, going 7-1. Elden Wood and Nicky Wind combined for a 13-0 record as the two elder statesmen on the men's sabre squad, leading the way to a 26-1 record as a weapons group over three matches. The men's team had seven fencers go undefeated.Â
Like the men's sabre group, the women's weapon group posted a 26-1 record, as four of the five fencers went undefeated over the weekend. Women's epee earned two 9-0 matches with four fencers never losing. Lauren Yu and Katie McGillion-Moore also went undefeated for women's foil.Â
