Tar Heels Tame No. 10 Tigers, Win, 3-2, On The Road
September 7, 2025 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – Carolina field hockey wrapped up its road trip to the Garden State with a 3-2 win over No. 10 Princeton on Sunday afternoon at Bedford Field.
Â
The Tar Heels (4-0) had to fight back from an early deficit, but three unanswered goals within about four minutes of game time gave them a firm grasp on the game that they would no relinquish. Carolina continues its unbeaten run in the annual Conference Crossover, improving to 18-0 with two wins this weekend.
Â
"That was an intense one, but we're proud of the Heels today," head coach Erin Matson said after the game. "It was a battle for an entire 60 minutes and Princeton played a great game, but our Heels they stuck together and they worked hard. They took it one moment at a time and got it done and we're really excited to get back to Chapel Hill with another win."
Â
The hosts scored the game's first goal off a deflection from a penalty corner shot. It is just the fifth time under Matson that the Tar Heels have allowed their opponent to get on the board first.
Â
But it was the true freshmen to the rescue for Matson's squad. With 30 seconds left in the first half, forward Eliza Perrin redirected a long pass from fellow rookie Isabel Boere for the Houston native's first career goal.
Â
Boere would not stop there. The Netherlands international proved to be the difference in the contest for the Tar Heels, as she found the back of the net twice on penalty corners.
Â
The two goals were separated by about a minute of game time. The first came on a bit of trickery as Boere passed to her fellow countrywoman Sietske Brüning who drew the flier before passing it back to Boere to sweep it home. The final goal was a straight forward sweep that found the bottom corner.
Â
Princeton pulled one back at the end of third to make it a one score game, but goalkeeper Katie Wimmer and the Carolina defense held strong the entire fourth quarter to see them to victory.
Â
The undefeated Tar Heels will return to Karen Shelton Stadium to finally play in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 12 against App State. Game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. ET with gates opening at 5 p.m.
