SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- No. 22 University of North Carolina women's soccer (7-4, 1-2 ACC) fell 4-3 in a battle against no. 2 Notre Dame (8-0-1, 3-0 ACC) Wednesday night on the road. Freshman Lauren Malsom led the Tar Heels with her first career brace.
Notre Dame got on the board with an early goal in the seventh minute. The Fighting Irish went on to add another goal later in the first half.
Despite the early momentum from Notre Dame, UNC didn't back down. As Linda Ullmark took Carolina's first corner kick of the match in the 38th minute, Lauren Malsom met the ball to head it home for the Tar Heels' first goal of the night. UNC remained within one heading into the break.
The Fighting Irish found the back of the net again to start the second half.
Malsom found herself with the ball inside the 18-yard box where she nailed her second goal of the night. The freshman's goal marked her first brace of the season while bringing Carolina within one yet again.
Notre Dame countered with another goal in the 72nd minute to keep UNC at bay.
The Tar Heels continued to fight despite the deficit. With the clock winding down, Olivia Thomas sent a rocket to the back of the goal to net her first of the night late in the 85th minute.
Carolina's late attempt to come back fell just short as the Tar Heels walked away with a 4-3 loss to the Fighting Irish.
