Volleyball Falls In Five On The Road At South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the first time this season, Carolina volleyball (5-1) fell (25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 25-20, 13-15) in a five-set heartbreaker to South Carolina (4-4).

Hailey Pearce was a bright spot for the Tar Heels with her 18 kills and a .308 hitting percentage.

The Gamecocks never let Carolina gain any sort of moment. Through the first three sets the longest run that the Tar Heels had was 3-0.

After taking the first set, UNC dropped the next two. With their backs against the wall, the Tar Heels came out swinging in the fourth using a 4-0 run to grab a 14-11 lead. After South Carolina drew within two, Carolina had another 3-0 run to pull ahead 20-15. The two teams traded points until Carolina ended up forcing the fifth set with a 25-20 win.

In the fifth, South Carolina raced out to a 10-5 lead but UNC didn't fold. It rattled off a 5-0 run to tie things up at 10-10 then a 2-0 run to draw even at 12-12. The deciding set was tied at 13-13 when the Gamecocks scored the final two points to take the set and the match.

The Tar Heels now shift their attention to a Tuesday match back at home against App State.
