Volleyball Downs App State, 3-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -Â North Carolina volleyball pushed its impressive winning streak against Appalachian State (25-17, 20-25, 25-15, 25-18) to 28 straight matches on Tuesday night. Carolina improves to 6-1 on the season while staying undefeated at home.
Volleyball has never lost to the Mountaineers at home in Carmichael Arena as they improved to 17-0 against them dating back to 1976.

Carolina's defense was on display tonight as the team held App State to .138 hitting. While also out hitting the opposition by nearly 150 points.

Safi Hampton started quickly as she paced the Tar Heels with a team-high of six kills in the opening frame. Hampton sparked a 7-1 run to push the set to set point before Tar Heels won 25-17.

App State battled back in the second set, taking it 25-20.

Carolina immediately regrouped in the third. The Tar Heels kicked off on a 7-2 run, which forced App State to take a timeout. They didn't lose any of the momentum and continued to build on the commanding lead, pushing it to 20-12, before winning it 25-15.

Carolina closed the door on App State in the fourth and final set right out the gate, taking a 2-1 lead and holding on for the rest of the set.

Hampton showed out, as she has all season, with a game-high 17 kills while hitting .410. Hailey Pearce added nine kills, Chelsea Thrope tacked on eight, and Laynie Smith had seven to round out a balanced Tar Heel offense. Jackie Taylor had an all round strong showing with five kills and five blocks. On the year she leads the team with 31 blocks, nine more than anyone else on the team.
