On To Waco! Women’s Tennis Tops Wolfpack In NCAA Super Regional, 4-2
May 9, 2025 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— Alanis Hamilton dropped her first set, came from behind to win her second and then clinched the match with a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 win at No 4 singles as fifth-seeded North Carolina beat 12th-seeded NC State, 4-2, on Friday in the NCAA Super Regional.
The Tar Heels dropped the doubles point for just the third time in 30 dual matches this spring but came from behind to clinch the victory behind singles wins from Theadora Rabman, Reese Brantmeier, Carson Tanguilig and Hamilton.
Carolina will meet No. 13 seed LSU next Thursday May 15 in an NCAA quarterfinal match in Waco, Texas. The Tigers upset fourth-seeded Ohio State on Friday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio.
UNC has won 11 consecutive matches (outscoring its opponents 44-5 with eight shutouts during the winning streak) and improved to 26-4 this season. NCSU's season ends at 19-7. The Tar Heels, who beat NCSU 4-3 in the regular season in Chapel Hill and 4-1 in the ACC Championship semifinals in Cary, N.C., topped the Wolfpack for a third time in 2025.
Carolina will be appearing in the NCAA Elite Eight for the 13th time, all since 2002.
"It's tough when you lose the doubles point, especially the way we lost it," said Tar Heel head coach Brian Kalbas. "We had match point [at No. 2 doubles], we were playing well, but they [NC State] were playing really well, it could've gone either way. I wasn't upset or frustrated or disappointed at all, I was actually very encouraged because of the way we were playing. But, you have to have all six players compete when you lose the doubles point, you can't give a point away here and there in singles."
The Wolfpack struck first in doubles play when the seventh-ranked duo of Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo topped #2 Brantmeier and Hamilton, 6-3, at the No. 1 slot. Carolina responded with a win at No. 3 by Rabman and Tatum Evans, 6-4, over Kristina Paskauska and Mia Slama.
NCSU won the doubles clincher in a tight match at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point when Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova edged #16 Tanguilig and Susanna Maltby, 7-6 (6).
Carolina tied it at 1-all behind a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles by Rabman over the 76th-ranked Zampardo. Shortly thereafter, the Tar Heels took their first lead at 2-1 when Brantmeier beat #55 Zyryanova by a score of 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.
Tanguilig gave Carolina a 3-1 advantage when she topped #110 Slama (NCSU), 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 5 slot, only to see the Pack cut it to 3-2 less than a minute later when #86 Gabia Paskauskas beat Claire Hill at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1.
Hamilton won the clincher, coming from behind after losing the first set and trailing, 5-3, in the second.
"I had some flashbacks to last year," Tanguilig said. "Honestly, I was not feeling great after doubles, considering I missed a very similar ball on match point in this round last year in the deciding doubles match. Just the relief of getting through the singles and how hard everyone fought and how decisive it looked like at the end, it felt really good."
FINAL SCORE: #5 seed North Carolina 4, #12 seed NC State 2
