Georgia Stops Women's Tennis In NCAA Semifinal, 4-0
May 17, 2025 | Women's Tennis
WACO, TEXAS—Top-seeded and top-ranked Georgia won the doubles point and went on to defeat fifth-seeded North Carolina, 4-0, in an NCAA semifinal match on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels played shorthanded without Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Reese Brantmeier, who was forced to retire due to injury in Thursday's quarterfinal win over LSU. Despite strong efforts across the board by Carolina, the Bulldogs took advantage to advance to the NCAA championship match for the second consecutive year.
UNC saw its 12-match winning streak and its season come to an end at 27-5.
Georgia improved to 28-3 and advanced to Sunday's NCAA final against Texas A&M, which beat Michigan in Saturday's second semifinal. The Bulldogs are now 5-16 all-time against Carolina.
In doubles play, the 16th-ranked, All-America duo of Susanna Maltby and Carson Tanguilig moved up from their normal No. 2 doubles position to No. 1 to face the top-ranked Georgia team of Dasha Vidmanova and Mell Reasco. Maltby and Tanguilig started strong and played well, but Vidmanova and Reasco were too much and won, 6-3.
Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 doubles and had an early lead over #68 Guillermina Grant and Anastasiia Lopata before falling, 6-2. Veteran Lindsay Zink stepped in and teamed with Alanis Hamilton, Brantmeier's normal doubles partner, to man the No. 3 slot. Their match went unfinished with Hamilton and Zink leading, 5-3.
The Bulldogs took the first set in five of six singles matches against the revamped UNC lineup. Georgia went on to take wins at the No. 3, 5 and 1 positions to win the match, 4-0.
"It was an incredible accomplishment for this team to be where we started in January with two brand-new players in Claire [Hill] and Alanis and with Reese coming back from two surgeries and what we lost in our six seniors from last year and be able to get to the Final Four and have a chance to be one of those teams to win the whole thing...ACC champs, so just really, really proud," UNC head coach Brian Kalbas said. "We had probably one of the best leadership groups we've ever had in Carson, Lindsay and Reese, and they did an amazing job of leading our team and excelling throughout the whole season.
"We showed tremendous belief that we could beat the No. 1 team in the country, and we had chances [today]…we were just great fighters. I'm proud of the whole team today and throughout the season."
