Carolina Drops Midweek Matchup To UCONN
March 19, 2025 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina baseball hosted UCONN for a Wednesday night contest and jumped out to an early lead but ultimately fell to the Huskies 5-1.
The Tar Heels (16-5, 2-4 ACC) continued to struggle at the plate, recording six hits but failing to find the gaps when they had runners in scoring positions.
The lone bright spot on the day for Carolina came right from leadoff man Kane Kepley, who sent the first pitch of the ball game over the right field fence for a solo shot. It was Kepley's first home run of the season and bring his slugging percentage up to .560, third-best on the team and remarkably high for someone who only has the one long ball to his name.
The bats went quiet after Kepley's homer, however. North Carolina showed their discipline in drawing seven walks to try and manufacture some baserunners. The team entered the day 17th in the country in drawing free passes.
Three walks in the eighth loaded the bases for the Heels, but they were unable to capitalize. Then a Tyson Bass leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth gave a flicker of hope before the Huskies ultimately put the game to bed.
On the mound for the Tar Heels, Ryan Lynch and Olin Johnson both put together solid outings to keep the game close in the middle innings. Lynch threw 2.2 frames, only allowing one hit and adding two strikeouts to his tally of 26 on the season.
Johnson has looked great in his last couple of outings since moving into the bullpen and he matched Lynch's effort today. The big righty from Bellingham, Wash., threw 2.1 innings with just one hit and two punchouts of his own.
North Carolina will have to rally quickly, as the team ships up north to face Boston College this weekend. First pitch for Friday's contest in Brighton, Mass., is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. Coverage of all three games will come on ACCNX.
