March 12, 2025 | Swimming & Diving
Auburn, Ala. – University of North Carolina diver Aranza Vázquez Montaño won the platform competition at the NCAA Zone B Championships in Auburn, Ala. on Wednesday. Teammates Sofia Knight and Lanie Gutch also qualified to NCAAs by finishing second and eighth, respectively, in the event. Both Vázquez Montaño and Gutch will compete at the NCAAs on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform, while Knight will represent UNC on the platform.
Vázquez Montaño used a 298.50 to qualify first out of prelims earlier today. She followed that with a 299.15 on her final five dives to win the competition with 597.65 points. Vázquez Montaño will look to defend her NCAA titles on both the 1-meter and 3-meter and will attempt to win her first national title on the platform.
Knight had a huge day to finish off her first NCAA Zone competition. She put herself in great position to be in the top seven and qualify for NCAAs by placing third in prelims with 293.20 points. Knight scored 295.4 points on her five remaining dives to nail down the second spot and book her ticket to Federal Way, Wash.
Gutch followed two strong performances on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, including a victory yesterday at 3-meters, with another excellent showing on the platform. She finished just outside the automatic qualifiers by finishing eighth with 523.3 points, but because she had already qualified in the other two events and finished in the top 12, she'll compete in all three events at NCAAs.
Ellie Joyce finished off her sophomore season with a 14th-place finish on the platform. Joyce set a personal best over five dives during prelims today with a score of 258.85. That mark positions her at No. 8 all-time on UNC's list. Joyce also moved to No. 3 all-time at UNC in the 1-meter and No. 4 all-time in the 3-meter during the 2025 season.
