March 1, 2025 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina baseball secured the series win over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 win in front of a season-high crowd at Boshamer Stadium.
The Tar Heels (11-0, 0-0 ACC) continue to get it done on both sides of the ball. Carolina's pitching staff rang up 17 Stony Brook batters while UNC hitters reached double digit hits for the fourth game in a row.
The 17 strikeouts to two walks today marks the first time the Heels have been +15 in Ks to walks ratio since going 15:0 at Georgia Tech on May 20, 2021.
Veteran Jake Knapp put together his best outing of the year, punching out a career-best eight batters in 5.0 innings while only allowing one run. Ryan Lynch and Matthew Matthijs backed him up in relief, adding six and three more strikeouts of their own.
Liberty transfer Kane Kepley jump started the game with a walk, stole third, and eventually came around to score to get Carolina on the board in the first. He has been the leadoff man in every game for the Heels and has gotten on base in his first plate appearance six of the 11 opportunities.
A pair of two-run homers to deep left from Hunter Stokely and Luke Stevenson broke the game open in the early going. The birthday boy Stokely sent his 379 feet out in the third before Stevenson followed with a 387-footer in the fourth.
It is a team-best fourth long ball for Stokely, who is on pace to shatter his career-best season-long mark. His previous high was six in 2023. In his last five games, he's hitting .444 with eight hits, runs and RBIs.
Across those same five games, true freshman Perry Hargett is leading the team in batting average (.545), second in total bases (13), and third in runs (6) despite only playing in three and starting the last two.
Captain Jackson Van De Brake reached safely in all four of his plate appearances on Saturday. He recorded three hits, a run, and a walk from the nine hole.
The Tar Heels will look to lock up their third series sweep of the season on Sunday with the final game against Stony Brook scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET in Boshamer Stadium. This contest will be live streamed on ACCNX.
