Men Finish Fourth, Women Sixth At ACC Swimming & Diving Championships
February 22, 2025 | Swimming & Diving
Chapel Hill, N.C. – University of North Carolina swimming and diving wrapped up the ACC Championships on Saturday with the men's team finishing fourth (852) and the women's team placing sixth (781.5). The fourth-place finish for the men is their best at the conference meet since a third-place finish in 2016, which is even more impressive considering the top two teams in the competition this year are newcomers to the league.
Over the course of the five-day event, the men's and women's programs combined to secure eight podiums, 12 school records and 49 Top 10 performances.
Aranza Vázquez Montaño was voted Most Valuable Diver after an ACC Championship in the 1-meter and a silver on the platform. She completed her illustrious ACC career with a second-place finish, scoring 326.90 points. Vázquez Montaño was joined on the podium by freshman Sofia Knight, who earned bronze and moved into No. 3 all-time at UNC with a score of 326.20. Freshman Lanie Gutch followed-up on a 3-meter podium finish earlier in the week with a fourth-place finish on the platform with 322.75 points.
Ben Delmar bettered his school-record time in the 200 breast, finishing fifth in 1:51.29. That mark would have earned him an invite to last year's NCAA meet. Newcomer Xavier Ruiz placed seventh in the event with a 1:53.10. The men's 400-yard freestyle relay of Patrick Hussey, Louis Dramm, PJ Foy and Martin Kartavi set a school record of 2:49.62 to finish seventh in the event.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay of Georgia Nel, Elizabeth Sowards, Skyler Smith and Greer Pattison finished eight in 3:14.60. The women had four finalists in the 200 back led by Sophia Frei, who finished 11th and moved to No. 4 all-time at UNC with a 1:53.03. Emma Karam placed 14th, while Maren Conze moved to No. 6 all-time (1:53.30), finishing in 17th. Aislin Farris improved on her prelims time to finish 21st and remain No. 9 all-time (1:54.93).
Lily Reader finished in ninth place of the 1650 free and moved into the Top 10 at UNC with a 16:19.74. Nel improved on her personal best to remain No. 6 all-time (48.37) and finish 18th in the 100 free.

Ruiz was joined by Delmar in the A final of the 200 breast, while Carter Freudenstein moved up to No. 6 all-time (1:55.11) to earn a second swim. Matthew Van Deusen moved into No. 6 all-time in the 200 back with a time of 1:41.87 to qualify for the B final.
