Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader With The Citadel

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The University of North Carolina men's tennis team made quick work of The Citadel on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 7-0 and 7-0 on the Cone-Kenfield indoor courts at the Chewning Tennis Center. Anthony Wright won the clinching singles match in both victories.
With the wins, the Tar Heels improved to 6-3 this season. The Citadel fell to 1-6.
The matchups featured the two winningest head coaches in Atlantic Coast Conference history. The Citadel's Chuck Kriese won 685 matches while leading the program at Clemson, and Carolina's Sam Paul is second in ACC history with 580 career victories including Saturday's wins.
In the day's opening match, the Tar Heels swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Vladislav Melnic and Chris Xu picked up the first win at No. 1, 6-0, followed by a 6-3 victory at No. 2 by Diego Jarry and Wright. Constantinos Djakouris and Nick Mangiapane also won, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Carolina made quick work of the Bulldogs once singes action began in Saturday morning's first match, losing just six combined games in sweeping the first set at all six slots in the lineup. The Tar Heels won all six matches in straight sets for a 7-0 team victory. Wright won the clincher at the No. 4 position.
It was more of the same in the day's second match, as the Tar Heels started strong and swept their way to three doubles wins for a 1-0 lead. In singles action, Melnic (No. 1), Xu (3) and Wright (4) each won their matches in rapid succession to clinch the victory.
Carolina's Dennis Perumov, a Chapel Hill native, won his first career dual match, and Djakouris wrapped up the day's match with a win at No. 2.
