Men's Tennis Opens Season Sunday Vs. JMU
January 17, 2025 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The University of North Carolina men's tennis team will open its 2024-25 spring season on Sunday at home when it hosts James Madison on the Cone-Kenfield indoor courts at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Head coach Sam Paul enters his 32nd season at the helm of the Tar Heel program with a career record of 574-241 in Chapel Hill. He has more wins than any active Atlantic Coast Conference coach and the most wins in school history.
Carolina went 14-10 last season overall, including 7-5 in the ACC. The Tar Heels return lettermen Logan Zapp, Patrick Schoen and Dennis Perumov from last year's roster, along with redshirt freshman Anthony Wright. Three freshmen and three transfers round out the Tar Heel roster.
This season, UNC will face some of the nation's top teams once again. Up to 12 of UNC's 2025 opponents earned spots in last year's NCAA Championship, including Charlotte (potential ITA Kickoff opponent), Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Memphis, South Carolina State, SMU, Stanford, Virginia and Wake Forest (potential ITA Kickoff foe).
Following Sunday's match, the Tar Heels will make the short drive to Winston-Salem for an ITA Kickoff Weekend regional hosted by Wake Forest. Carolina will play Memphis in the opening round on Friday January 24 at 2 p.m. before facing either Charlotte or the host Demon Deacons on Saturday with a trip to the ITA Team Indoor National Championships next month in Waco, Texas.
