Men's Tennis Blanks JMU To Open Season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—North Carolina's men's tennis team started its 2025 dual match season in style on Sunday afternoon, beating James Madison, 7-0, in the season opener for both teams at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Courts at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Carolina got five singles wins from newcomers to its roster, which features three returning letterwinners with college experience. The Tar Heels improved to 1-0, while the Dukes fell to 0-1.
Carolina picked up doubles wins at No. 1 (#26 Patrick Schoen and Logan Zapp) and No. 3 (Constantinos Djakouris and Anthony Wright).
Djakouris (No. 3), Zapp (No. 1), Nick Mangiapane (No. 6), Chris Xu (No. 4), Anthony Wright (No. 5) and Vladislav Melnic (No. 2) all won their singles matches.
How It Happened
Doubles
• Schoen and Zapp, ranked #26 nationally, won the first doubles decision of the day at No. 1. The Tar Heel duo beat Esteve Agusti and Aurelien Schmitt, 6-2, breaking serve in the final game to do so.
• The Tar Heels clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 3 when Djakouris used a nifty volley at the net to clinch at 6-3 win with Wright over Zach Fleishman and Francisco Sinopoli.
• Vladislav Melnic and Chris Xu were leading their match at No. 2 doubles, 5-3, before their match went unfinished.
Singles
• Djakouris made quick work of Francisco Sinopoli at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, to win his first singles match as a Tar Heel and make the score 2-0 Tar Heels.
• Zapp, who missed last season due to injury, won his first singles match in over a year, topping Agusti, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 for a 3-0 UNC advantage.
• Freshman Nick Mangiapane won his first college dual singles match to clinch the team victory, making the score 4-0 Carolina with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Markus Giersiepen.
• Fellow freshman Chris Xu beat Zach Fleishman in a third-set tiebreaker for his first college dual win, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (2), making the score 5-0.
• Moments later, redshirt freshman Anthony Wright won his match at No. 5, topping Dennis Wiebe, 7-5, 6-3.
• In the final match of the afternoon, Melnic trailed, 5-3, in the first set, roared back to 6-5 before dropping the frame, 7-6 (5). Melnic won the second set, 6-4, then won the third-set tiebreaker by a score of 10-7.
