VB Caps Off Non-Conference Play With Four-Set Win Over Michigan State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina volleyball team (8-1) dispatched Michigan State (7-4) in four sets (25-18, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20) on Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. With the victory, the Tar Heels capped off their non-conference slate and improved to 5-0 at home.
Emani' Foster (15), Mabrey Shaffmaster (13) and Safi Hampton (12) carried the Tar Heel offense against the Spartans, each finishing the match with double-digit kills. Shaffmaster has now posted double-digit kills in six straight matches.
Hampton (12 kills, 10 digs) and Shaffmaster (13 kills, 16 digs) also each had double-doubles, their second and third of the season, respectively.
Setters Zoe Behrendt (26) and Taylor Eisert (23) combined for 49 of the Tar Heels' 55 assists, while Alexis Engelbrecht led the Carolina block with five on the day. Engelbrecht has had no less than four total blocks in seven straight matches.
Maddy May led the defense with a season-high 19 digs. The junior libero is averaging 4.14 digs per set through the first nine matches of the season.
The Tar Heels outpaced the Spartans in most offensive categories in the match, including hitting percentage (.269-.238), kills (57-52) and assists (55-47).
Carolina started the match strong, firing on offense. The Tar Heels didn't trail once in the set, capping off the frame on a seven-point run. Shaffmaster, Hampton and Jackie Taylor each had three kills apiece.
Carolina struggled offensively in set two, falling 25-16 as Michigan State outhit them .414-.114.
The Tar Heels swung the momentum back their way in the third set off the hands of Shaffmaster and Foster. Both outside hitters had five kills in the third, including three straight kills from Shaffmaster, helping Carolina to a 25-23 set win.
The final set was dominated from the Tar Heels, with Carolina outhitting Michigan State .415-.227. The Spartans never held a lead in the 25-20 Tar Heel set four win.
Up next, the Tar Heels will look to build on their four-game winning streak when they host on Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
