VB Sweeps Syracuse For First ACC Victory Of The Season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina volleyball team (9-1, 1-0 ACC) dominated their way to the first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season, defeating Syracuse (12-1, 0-1 ACC) in straight sets (25-14, 25-9, 25-22) on Friday night in Carmichael Arena.
With the victory, the Tar Heels improve to 6-0 at home and 9-1 on the season.
Carolina dominated offensively outhitting the Orange .238-.012, led by sophomore outside hitter Safi Hampton who had 11 kills on a .320 clip. A balanced offensive attack, six different Tar Heels scored in the match.
Senior outside hitter Mabrey Shaffmaster, who contributed six kills and a match-best four service aces, tied with sophomore setter Zoe Behrendt with a team-high nine digs apiece.
Graduate Alexis Engelbrecht led Carolina with five total blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs, the third-straight match she has recorded five blocks.
Setters Behrendt (20) and Taylor Eisert (11) combined with Maddy May (6) to make up the 38 assists in the match.

- With four aces in the match, Shaffmaster etched herself into the UNC career record book once again. She now has 117 career aces, tied for ninth-most in program history with Ashley Powers (1993-1996)
- She has tallied a total of 20 aces this season, a team-best, including four multi-ace matches
- Hampton posted a match-best 11 kills, her fifth-straight match with double-digit kills
