Softball Clinches Virginia Series With Doubleheader Sweep

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team (19-4, 2-1 ACC) clinched its first ACC series of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Virginia (15-7, 3-3 ACC) on Sunday afternoon.
The Tar Heel pitching staff locked down the Hoos in the cirlce, allowing two runs, just one earned, and five hits in 14 innings of play.
After being shutout in the first game of the series, Carolina also responded at the plate, outhitting Virginia 14-5 on the day, led by four hits apiece from freshman Sanaa Thompson and junior Alex Coleman and three RBIs from graduate Autumn Owen. Both Thompson and Owen each hit a home run in game two.
Sophomore Kenna Raye Dark (4-0) started the first game of the day in the circle for the Heels, throwing her fourth complete game of the season, a team-high, finishing with a line of three hits, three walks and an unearned run.
Redshirt junior Britton Rogers (8-0) tossed 6.1 innings of game two, allowing just two hits, one run and seven walks to go with eight strikeouts. Senior Talia Hannappel recorded the last two outs in the seventh inning, which included a strikeout, to seal the game two win.
Abby Settlemyre led the Tar Heels at the plate in the series, going 4-of-7 with two RBIs, a double and a pair of walks.
Up next, Carolina will travel to Elon for a 5 p.m. Tuesday midweek with the Phoenix.
