Volleyball Bows Out Of NCAA Tournament After Loss To No. 1 Seed Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Carolina volleyball team fell in four sets to No. 1 seed Penn State on Saturday night.
Carolina got off to a quick start, racing out to a 7-3 lead. Penn State fired back and eventually took the set 25-21. The Tar Heels hit .226 in the first frame. Mabrey Shaffmaster had four kills and Alexis Engelbrecht had three.
In the second set, Penn State came out firing, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. The Tar Heels weren't able to mount a comeback, falling 25-18.
With their backs against the wall in the set, the Tar Heels wouldn't go down without a fight. Behind five kills from Safi Hampton, Carolina was able to take the set 25-20. Up 11-10, the Tar Heels used a 4-1 run to go into the media timeout up 15-11. After a Shaffmaster kill Penn State would burn a timeout with Carolina up 20-15. Penn State came back and made things interesting with a 5-2 run to make it 22-20. Hampton would wrap the set up with back-to-back kills.
Penn State gained control of the fourth set early and wouldn't let up, taking it 25-15.
Shaffmaster finished her final match as a Tar Heel with a team-high 12 kills. Engelbrecht had 10 and Hampton was right behind her with nine. Shaffmaster, Hampton, and Maddy May all had two service aces.
The 2024 campaign comes to a close with the Tar Heels posting a 23-8 record on the year.
