Women’s Soccer Begins Quest For 23rd National Championship

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Earning a No. 2 seed in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament, North Carolina begins its quest for its 23rd national championship in program history on Friday, Nov. 15, by hosting USC Upstate in the first round.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field and the match will air on ESPN+ with Kyle Straub on call. Tickets are available for purchase here.

NCAA Tournament Tidbits
- North Carolina extends its streak as the only team to appear in all 43 NCAA Tournaments.
- The Tar Heels have an all-time record of 147-18-5 (.879) in the NCAA Tournament.
- Carolina has won 21 of 42 NCAA titles, plus the 1981 AIAW title for 22 national championships.
- Carolina has appeared in 31 College Cups, including four of the last six. No other team has been in more than 14.
- UNC has advanced to the national title game 27 times, including three of the last six, and has finished as the national runner-up on six occasions.
- The Tar Heels have been a No. 2 seed 12 times before, winning five NCAA crowns as a second seed, including its last title in 2012.
- UNC is 24-1 all-time in the NCAA First Round, having out-scored its first-round opponents 102-6.
- Seven current players in Maddie Dahlien, Tessa Dellarose, Makenna Dominguez, Emerson Elgin, Kate Faasse, Asha Means and Bella Sember were on the 2022 NCAA runner-up team.

- Four Tar Heels were named to the All-ACC Tournament Team: Trinity Armstrong, Dahlien, Faasse and Linda Ullmark. The last time UNC had multiple freshmen on the All-ACC Tournament team was in 2010 (Crystal Dunn, Kealia Ohai, Meg Morris).
- Six Tar Heels combined for seven All-ACC postseason honors: Armstrong and Faasse on the First Team; Dahlien and Dellarose on the Third Team; and Armstrong, Bella Gaetino and Ullmark on the All-Freshman Team.
- Faasse leads the team with 16 goals and 33 points. Her six game-winning goals rank first in the ACC and tied for third in the nation, and she has scored nine goals in the last 10 games.
- A junior, Faasse already has four braces on the year. Only three Tar Heels have had 3+ braces in a single season in the last decade: Faasse (4, 2024), Alessia Russo (5, 2019) and Bridgette Andrzejewski (4, 2016).
- Faasse also bagged a brace in the ACC championship game, becoming the first Tar Heel to score twice in the title game since Casey Nogueira in 2009, also against FSU.
- Carolina earned its NCAA-leading 950th win in program history on Nov. 7. UConn ranks second in NCAA DI history with 628 (as of Nov. 12).
- UNC is currently No. 2 in the latest NCAA RPI from Nov. 10. The team was No. 1 for five straight weeks and has been in the top-4 all year.
- UNC's ACC Tournament semifinal win over Duke was the first time it had beat a No. 1-ranked opponent since Nov. 10, 2019, in a 2-1 double OT win over Virginia to win the 2019 ACC title.
