Swimming & Diving Splits With Virginia In Friday Dual

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina swimming and diving team split with Virginia on Friday evening at Koury Natatorium in its final dual meet before the midseason invitational later this month.
The unranked UNC men's team had a dominant performance against 15th-ranked Virginia, winning by a score of 208.5-91.5. The Tar Heel men swept four events, clinched both relays and won 13 individual events in the victory.Â
Highlighted by Aranza Vázquez Montaño winning both boards, the No. 21 Carolina women put up a great effort against four-time reigning national champion and top-ranked Virginia, ultimately dropping a 213.5-85.5 decision.Â
Including Vázquez Montaño, Tar Heel double-event winners included Patrick Hussey (men's 200/500 freestyle), Ben Delmar (men's 100/200 breaststroke) and Sebastian Lunak (men's 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley).
Tar Heel Event Wins
Carter Loftin dove to first on the men's 3-meter board after scoring 382.35 as Rodolfo Vázquez Montaño placed second with a mark of 377.78. R. Vázquez Montaño then led a sweep on the 1-meter, placing first (345.53) ahead of Chris Booler (343.58) and Loftin (300.60).Â
Walker Davis, Xavier Ruiz, Boyd Poelke and Louis Dramm kicked things off in the pool by winning the opening men's 200 medley relay in 1:24.52. UNC went 1-2 as Reid Miller, Delmar, PJ Foy and Hussey took second in 1:25.02.Â
Grace Hodgins dipped under 10 minutes in the women's 1000 freestyle for the first time in her career, clocking in at 9:58.69 to finish third and crushing her previous best time of 10:03.20 from last weekend. Also with third-place finishes for the women were Greer Pattison in the 100 backstroke (52.67), Mary Macaulay in the 200 butterfly (1:57.00), and Elizabeth Sowards in the 50 freestyle (22.63) for a new best time.Â
Brady Begin won the first individual swimming event for the Tar Heels, claiming a five-second victory in the men's 1000 freestyle. He finished in 9:06.94 to surpass his old best time of 9:10.02 from a week ago. Keith Williams took third in 9:15.60 for a two-second PB.
Georgia Nel powered home to a second-place finish in the women's 200 freestyle. Her time of 1:45.29 was right on her best time of 1:45.06 from the 2024 NCAA Championships. She also placed third in the 100 freestyle in 48.68, shaving .01 off her lifetime best. Emma Karam also got a runner-up showing in the women's 200 backstroke, getting her hand to the wall in 1:55.26.
An impressive back half gave Hussey, who represented Canada at the 2024 Olympic Games, a win in the men's 200 freestyle in 1:34.54, about two-tenths ahead of runner-up David King (1:34.79) of Virginia. Dramm was third in 1:35.31. Hussey soon went on to win the men's 500 freestyle in 4:21.32 after yet another remarkable final push, again edging out King (4:21.51). Dramm was then victorious in the men's 100 freestyle in 43.47 – just three-hundredths ahead of UVA's Connor Boyle (43.50).
Davis gave the Tar Heels another victory, this time in the men's 100 backstroke after he stopped the clock in 46.53. JT Schmid was third in 47.34, also taking second in the 200 backstroke in 1:42.40 – a best time by over half a second. Â
Finishing second to 2024 U.S. Olympian Emma Weber in the women's 100 breaststroke was Skyler Smith, whose time of 59.13 marked the 14th time in her career she has snuck under the 60-second barrier.
Delmar (52.17), Ruiz (53.46) and Carter Freudenstein (54.09) swept the men's 100 breaststroke. Delmar clocked a best time to lower the 52.70 he did from the 2024 NCAA Championships, and Freudenstein eclipsed the 54.31 from last weekend. The trio also swept the men's 200 breaststroke. Delmar again paved the way by winning by over three seconds in 1:53.30. Freudenstein (1:56.94) and Ruiz (1:57.23) finished second and third, respectively, with Freudenstein getting a half-second PR.Â
Lunak kept things rolling in the men's 200 butterfly, securing another Tar Heel victory by over a second in 1:42.21. Colin Whelehan clocked a new lifetime best of 1:44.13 for third place, erasing his previous best of 1:44.81 from last season's ACC Championships. Lunak soon after was the first Tar Heel in a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the men's 200 individual medley. He turned in a time of 1:46.19, followed by Schmid (1:46.50), Delmar (1:46.60) and Freudenstein (1:46.93). Delmar set a new PB.
Foy secured a narrow victory in the men's 50 freestyle, touching in 19.84 as the first of four swimmers under the 20-second marker. He out-touched Virginia's Simon Lins and Boyle who tied for second in 19.88. It was his fourth time under 20 seconds in his career. Another win was from Poelke who flew to the top spot in the men's 100 butterfly in 45.82, narrowly finishing ahead of UVA's Spencer Nicholas (45.85) by .03.Â
The women's 200 freestyle relay squad of Pattison (22.66), Nel (22.04), Sowards (22.08) and Mackenzie Headley (22.32) combined in 1:29.10 to take second. The meet ended on a high note as Davis (20.20), Dramm (18.98), Hussey (19.06) and Foy (18.94) won the men's 200 freestyle relay in 1:17.18 ahead of UVA's 1:17.45.
Now, the Tar Heels turn their attention to the midseason invitational. The team will compete at the South Carolina Invitational from Nov. 20-22 in Columbia.Â
