
Swimming & Diving Sweeps South Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina swimming and diving team swept six races and won 22 of a possible 32 events in a sweep of South Carolina on Saturday morning at Koury Natatorium. Emma Karam, Georgia Nel, Ben Delmar and Patrick Hussey were double-event individual winners for the Tar Heels.

The Tar Heel men posted a decisive, 184-108 win over the Gamecocks. The 21st-ranked women took down their border battle foe with a final score of 187.5-112.5.

Tar Heel Event Wins
Rodolfo Vázquez Montaño dove to first place on the men's 1-meter with a mark of 340.43, followed by Chris Booler (305.48) in third. Vázquez Montaño also placed third on the 3-meter with a tally of 329.25 behind Carter Loftin in second with a score of 332.93.

On the women's side, the Tar Heels earned second and third on both boards. Aranza Vázquez Montaño (322.13) and Lanue Gutch (310.58) went 1-2 on the 1-meter, as did Gutch (337.65) and Ellie Joyce (330.00) on the 3-meter.

The quartet of Greer Pattison (52.14), Skyler Smith (1:00.05), Lily Sawyer (53.32) and Georgia Nel (48.32) started Carolina's winning ways by claiming the opening women's 400 medley relay in 3:33.83, nearly three seconds ahead of South Carolina.

Just as the women did, the Tar Heel men began the meet with a one-second victory in the 400 medley relay. Walker Davis (46.11), Ben Delmar (52.54), Boyd Poelke (46.19) and Patrick Hussey (43.24) combined in 3:08.08.

Lily Reader came out on top in a close women's 1000 freestyle, setting a new personal best by four seconds in 9:48.63 to edge out South Carolina's Madison Kolessar (9:49.14). Aislin Farris finished third in 9:56.76; Farris later took second in 4:15.99 in the women's 400 individual medley.

It was another close one in the women's 500 freestyle as just 0.19 separated the top two finishers. Maren Conze fought her way to first place in 4:50.62 to out-touch South Carolina's Breckin Gormley (4:50.81). Reader finished third in 4:52.29.

The home team went 2-3 in the men's 1000 freestyle. Freshman Brady Begin was the runner-up in 9:10.02 to eclipse his personal record of 9:10.42 set yesterday against Auburn. Louis Dramm was third in 9:12.10.

Nel, who won the women's 200 freestyle on Friday vs. the Tigers, repeated in the event today against the Gamecocks. She took first in 1:45.63 with Madeline Smith clocking in at 1:47.53 for third.Â

A double-event winner for the second meet in a row, Nel guided a sweep in the women's 100 freestyle as she repeated as the champ in 48.81. Michaela Chokureva (49.73) and Elizabeth Sowards (49.73) rounded out the top three as the only swimmers in the field under the 50-second marker. Chokureva tied her best time.Â

Hussey led a Tar Heel sweep of the top four spots in the men's 200 freestyle. The Canadian Olympian won the event by over a second in 1:36.31, followed by David Quaresma (1:37.35), Eddie Jin (1:37.39) and Matthew Van Deusen (1:37.72).

Hussey earned his second event title – just as he did on Friday night – in the men's 500 freestyle in 4:23.62, out-touching South Carolina's Connor Fry (4:23.83). Begin got another top-3 showing as he touched third in 4:27.07.

Like the 200 freestyle, the men's 100 freestyle also saw UNC take the first four positions. Dramm topped the field in 43.38 as Van Deusen (43.96), Quaresma (44.43) and Nate Hohm (44.51) took second, third and fourth. Van Deusen and Hohm both set PBs.Â

Another Carolina sweep came in the women's 100 backstroke. Emma Karam paved the way in 52.26 for first, just about a two-tenths off her lifetime best. Sowards (53.65) and Sophia Frei (54.33) rounded out the top three.Â

Karam powered home to her second-straight victory in the women's 200 backstroke to become a double-event winner on the day, stopping the clock in 1:54.67. Similar to the shorter of the two distances, Frei again placed third in a time of 1:57.70.

FIrst and second place in the men's 100 backstroke belonged to the Tar Heels. Davis cruised to first in 45.86, winning the event by 2.5 seconds for a new personal record and his first time under 46 seconds. Adam Maraana, who raced this event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, was second in 48.25.

Winning the women's 100 breaststroke for the second day in a row was Smith who got her hands to the wall in 1:00.77 as Samantha Armand raced to second in 1:01.69. Armand (2:14.93) later took third in the women's 200 breaststroke, right behind Ava Muzzy (2:14.90) with a new best time for second place.

The men also went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke: Delmar finished first in 53.36 with Xavier Ruiz close behind in 53.72. Not too long after, Delmar picked up another win in the men's 200 breaststroke in 1:54.60, leading a sweep as Ruiz (1:57.25) and Freudenstein (1:57.79) took second and third, respectively.

Mary Macaulay won the women's 400 individual medley by 3.5 seconds in 4:12.41, crushing her previous career high of 4:15.01. She was also the runner-up in the women's 200 butterfly, as her time of 1:56.62 lowered her personal best of 1:56.98 she set Friday night.Â

UNC had another 1-2 punch, this time in the men's 200 butterfly. Sebastian Lunak took first by nearly two seconds in 1:43.28 with Colin Whelehan claiming second in 1:45.17.

Greer Pattison sprinted to first place in the women's 50 freestyle with a final time of 22.48, exactly one-tenth faster than last night when she took second. The senior also finished third in the women's 100 butterfly in 53.31, crushing her previous best time of 54.60 from last year.

Another 1-4 sweep for the Tar Heel men came in the 50 freestyle. PJ Foy was the lone swimmer to dip under the 20-second barrier, doing so in 19.67 to shave time off his previous best of 19.73. Hohm (20.19), Tiesyn Harris (20.27) and Davis (20.30) followed, with Hohm also setting a new best time.Â

Freshmen went 1-2 in the men's 200 backstroke, as JT Schmid was victorious in 1:43.18 to match the new best time he posted Friday against Auburn. His classmate, James Bennison, was the runner-up in 1:45.47.Â
