Women's Golf Hosting Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational This Weekend
October 10, 2024 | Women's Golf
Twenty-third ranked UNC is one of five teams in this week's coaches' poll that are playing Friday-Sunday in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, which returns to Finley Golf Club after a two-year hiatus due to renovations at Carolina's on-campus course.
Â
UNC is coming off its first win of the season, an 18-stroke victory at the Cavalier Regional Preview at Virginia's Birdwood Golf Course in September. The Tar Heel Invitational is the third of four fall events.
Â
The Governors Club in Chapel Hill hosted the Tar Heel Invitational the last two seasons as Davis Love III and Love Golf Design redesigned and built Carolina's home course, which re-opened a year ago and hosted an NCAA men's golf regional in May of this year.
Â
Joining the Tar Heels in the field are seventh-ranked Wake Forest, No. 16 Duke, No. 18 Vanderbilt, No. 25 Michigan State, ECU, FIU, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, NC State, UNCG, UNCW, Rollins, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Western Carolina.
Â
Carolina, Wake Forest and Duke are paired in Friday's first groups, which begin play on the first hole at 8:30 a.m.
Â
Saturday's second round is scheduled to begin at 8:30, while Sunday features a shotgun start at 9:30.
Â
Admission and parking are free. Parking is available at the Finley North and South Lots near the soccer/lacrosse fields on Finley Golf Course Road.
Â
Carolina shot 22 under par in winning in Charlottesville. The Tar Heels set school records with a second-round 271 and their 54-hole total of 830. All five starters finished in the top 20, led by junior Inez Ng from Singapore, who won the tournament by eight strokes after shooting 69-65-67 for a 12-under-par 201.
Â
It was just the second time in UNC history a player shot in the 60s in all three rounds. Ng tied the UNC record for most strokes under par (12) and set a new standard for fewest strokes (201).
Â
Junior Megan Streicher, who holds UNC's records for lowest single-season and career scoring average, tied for second at 4 under par. Sophomore Ing Iadpluem finished fifth, freshman Helen Yeung tied for sixth, freshman Katie Vu (playing as an individual) tied for 10th and sophomore Reagan Southerland tied for 20th.
Â
Ng, Streicher, Iadpluem, Yeung and Southerland are back in the lineup this weekend. Vu and senior Riley Quartermain are also in the field as individual entries.
