Football Races Past Campbell, 59-7
November 4, 2023 | Football
After the Fighting Camels tied things at 7-7 midway through the first quarter, UNC pitched a shutout the rest of the way and allowed just 287 total yards in the game.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heels piled up 594 offensive yards and a season-high 59 points, their best scoring output in 22 games (since beating Appalachian State in a wild, 63-61, game in Boone, N.C., early last season).
Running back Omarion Hampton ran at will for 144 yards, and Drake Maye tied his season high with four touchdown passes in an efficient, 16-for-23 performance for 244 yards. Maye posted a passer rating of 216.1 before heading to the bench late in the third quarter with the outcome of the game well in-hand.
Tez Walker caught two passes, both for TDs, and now has six scoring grabs in five games this season.
Walker and Hampton both scored a pair of first-half touchdowns. Carolina scored TDs on three consecutive second-quarter drives to take control of the game after a somewhat sluggish offensive start. The score was 28-7 at the break.
"Our guys did what you're supposed to do," head coach Mack Brown said in his postgame press conference. "They took the team that they were better than and dominated them."
The Tar Heels snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-2 in their final non-conference game of the regular season. The Fighting Camels dropped to 4-5. It was the first-ever meeting between the two in-state schools.
Carolina limited Campbell to just 102 rushing yards while pounding out 276 on the ground, including 10 carries for 64 yards by British Brooks and an electrifying 61-yard scoring scamper by Conner Harrell in the fourth quarter.
The Tar Heel offense averaged 9.7 yards per play on the day, including 15.1 yards per completion and 8.4 per carry.
How It Happened
First Half
• After turning it over on downs on its first possession, Carolina took a 7-0 lead on a pass from Maye to Walker with 6:20 left in the first quarter.
• The Camels responded quickly with a touchdown drive of their own when Hajj-Malik Williams connected with Chaney Fitzgerald for a score on third-and-goal from the 19-yard line.
• Hampton had an apparent 75-yard TD run in the first quarter nullified by a holding penalty, but a few plays later he used a great cutback to race in from 54 yards away to grab a 14-7 Tar Heel lead.
• The Camels mounted a 13-play drive and tried to narrow the UNC advantage before missing a 33-yard field goal with 3:47 remaining until halftime.
• Carolina quickly took advantage when Maye connected with Walker for a second TD pass of the first half from 31 yards out.
• After a Tar Heel defensive stand on Campbell's next possession, Carolina aced the two-minute drill, marching 49 yards in 1:42 as Hampton scored from four yards out to make it 28-7 at the break.
• UNC ran 22 times for 181 yards in the first half, averaging 8.2 yards per carry.
Second Half
• Carolina used its no-huddle offense on its first possession after halftime, and Maye quickly connected with Tychaun Chatman for a 45-yard completion to the Campbell 25 after a breakdown by the Camel defense. On the next play, Maye hit tight end John Copenhaver for a 25-yard score and a 35-7 lead.
• The Tar Heels put things completely out of reach after an interception by Marcus Allen, going up 42-7 on a 21-yard pass from Maye to a wide-open J.J. Jones shortly thereafter.
• Harrell scored on a 61-yard rush to make the score 52-7, capping a four-play drive in just 1:28 in the fourth quarter.
