Gymnastics Faces George Washington At Carmichael Saturday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina gymnastics team is back in Carmichael Arena on Saturday, Jan. 28 to host George Washington at 4 p.m. ET in an East Atlantic Gymnastics League showdown. The meet will be broadcast on ACCNX with Brian Waer and Sarah Sailors on call.Â
Fans are encouraged to stay after the meet for an autograph session with the team. Admission is free and open to the public with doors opening one hour prior to start time. Â
The Tar Heels are coming off a pair of victories over UW Stout and Yale on Monday evening with a team score of 196.250, their highest of the season. Carolina also produced its highest marks of the year on bars (49.350) and beam (49.125) while earning podium finishes on all four events.Â
Leading the way for Carolina is Lali Dekanoidze, who first broke the program record on bars with an impressive 9.975 on Jan. 9 before matching that on Jan. 23. Julia Knower, who set a career-high 39.450 to jump to No. 8 all-time in school history in the home opener, has twice earned the all-around title this season.Â
The two sophomores were named the respective EAGL Specialist and Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 18, bringing their combined career total weekly conference awards to 10.
Behind Dekanoidze's 9.975 on bars to rank second in the nation and her team-high 9.900 on vault, Knower also leads the roster with a 9.925 on floor and Elizabeth Culton holds the highest mark on beam at 9.900.Â
UNC resumes EAGL action with an overall record of 4-2 on the year and 1-0 in league competition. The Tar Heels had a 196.475-194.825 victory over George Washington in Chapel Hill last year.Â
