Softball Finishes Carolina Classic With Wins Over UConn And UNCG

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team finished the Carolina Classic off with a 2-0 Sunday, earning 8-7 victories over both UConn and UNCG. The Tar Heels batted a season-best .429 against the Huskies, while tallying 23 hits on the day.
Junior outfielder Bri Stubbs led Carolina offensively, batting a team-best .833 on the day, going 5-of-6 at the plate with three doubles, four runs, two RBIs, two walks and a stolen base.
In the circle, Hannah George improved to 7-0, while Talia Hannapel earned her second victory of the season.
Sara Jubas and Kiannah Pierce were also both hot at the plate, each tallying a team-high four RBIs.
On the day, Carolina out-hit their opponents .390-.358.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Carolina: 8, UConn: 7

- The Tar Heel offense exploded in the first inning against the Huskies, tallying eight hits and plating six runs. Seven different Carolina players had a hit in the inning, including Bri Stubbs who had two hits, a double and a single
- Carolina tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth after Jubas doubled to left field, scoring Stubbs who drew a one-out walk. The Tar Heels held a 7-0 lead going into the fifth
- UConn surged back in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on six hits, including a two-run home run to cut the lead to just one run, 7-6
- The Tar Heels plated an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, with Kiannah Pierce and Alex Brown hitting back-to-back singles to open the inning, before both advancing on a wild pitch. An RBI sac fly from Gaby Katz plated pinch runner Aneshia Jordan to give Carolina an 8-7 lead
- UConn opened the top of the seventh with a solo home run, their second home run of the game and their last score of the day
- Senior Hannah George improved to 7-0 in the circle in the win, going 4.1 innings, allowing four runs, five hits with a strikeout and two walks
- Carlie Myrtle earned her first career save, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts and a walk
Game 2: Carolina: 8, UNCG: 7

UConn: 12-6
- UNCG scored first in the matchup, opening the first inning with a single up the middle which eventually scored on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead
- Carolina was able to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Skyler Brooks drew a one-out walk to open the inning, followed by Sara Jubas reaching on a Spartan error and advancing to second, putting runners on second and third. Taylor Greene then drew a walk to load the bases and then Pierce singled to right field, scoring Brooks and Jubas. Alex Brown then singled up the middle to plate pinch runner Carson Snead for the third run of the inning
- The Spartans tied the game up at 3 in the top of the second, plating two runs on a hit and two Tar Heel errors
- Carolina re-gained the lead in the bottom of the second. Stubbs opened the inning with a double to left field and was brought home by a Jubas RBI double to make it 4-3
- UNCG was able to go ahead 6-4 in the top of the third, hitting a three-run home run over the centerfield wall. The Spartans added to their lead in the top of the fourth, plating another run to make it a 7-4 game
- Carolina cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth, tallying three hits and two runs to make it a 7-6 game
- The Tar Heels took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, with back-to-back hits from Destiny Middleton and Stubbs to make it 7-7, before a Jubas single to right field gave UNC a 8-7 lead
- Stubbs threw a strike from the outfield to keep the tying run from scoring at the plate in the sixth
