MADISON, Wisc. - The No. 2 North Carolina women's tennis team booked its eighth straight appearance in the finals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a thrilling 4-1 victory over No. 6 NC State in a Sunday semifinals match from the Nielson Tennis Center.
North Carolina (10-0) will face Oklahoma in Monday's championship match at 1 p.m. ET.
The Tar Heels are one victory away from joining Stanford as the only programs to win three straight ITA Indoor titles. The Cardinal won three of its record 10 titles between 2004-06.
The match started 65 minutes late after Ohio State outlasted Auburn, 4-3, in the consolation bracket. The Wolfpack grabbed an early advantage in doubles, but UNC quickly turned momentum in its favor with wins from court three courtesy of No. 26 Alle Sanford and Reilly Tran and later from the top ranked duo in the nation - Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty - on court one to secure the 1-0 lead.
NC State (10-1) picked up a singles win on court two, however, No. 7 Tran answered right back with a 6-1, 6-4, victory on court three and No. 14 Carson Tanguilig made it 3-1 Tar Heels after a 7-5, 6-3, win on court five.
The remaining three singles matches were all pushed into third sets as the drama thickened between these two local and conference rivals.
No. 19 Crawley was in the midst of a tiebreaker on court four and No. 4 Cameron Morra was up 5-4 in her third set on court one when No. 74 Anika Yarlagadda clinched the fourth and deciding point on court six, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Carolina head coach Brian Kalbas improves to 20-0 all-time against NC State. The win also marked the 25th in a row over the Wolfpack, a streak that dates back to 1999.
