#2 Women's Tennis Tops Tulsa, 4-0
January 29, 2022 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's tennis team took another step forward in the 2022 season with its most complete effort thus far in the young dual season.
The second-ranked Tar Heels dispatched Tulsa, 4-0, in less than 90 minutes in Saturday's second-round match from the Chapel Hill region of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
"We were absolutely relentless today," said Carolina head coach Brian Kalbas. This was our first real competitive situation this season. A little more pressure, you're playing in a tournament. You're playing to qualify for something."
Carolina hasn't surrendered a point yet this season in six dual matches, yet Saturday felt a little different according to Kalbas
"Just to see the team's focus, intensity and comradery, and the girls cheering for each other and supporting each other … you could see it all come to fruition today.
"I'm hoping our team can be the most competitive team in the country."
UNC (6-0) took the opening doubles point in just over 20 minutes time with the clinch point coming from Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty, the No. 1 ranked team in the land.
The onslaught continued into singles. The six players surrendered only eight total points to the Golden Hurricane.
No. 57 Anika Yarlagadda was first to post a singles win from court six. No. 13 Carson Tanguilig finished up next to her teammate on court five and Scotty closed out the day's festivities with a win on court two.
The remaining three competitors - No. 5 Cameron Morra, No. 7 Reilly Tan and No. 19 Crawley were all within a point of victory as well
The Tar Heels head out on the road to face No. 14 Michigan next Saturday at 11 a.m.
Attention will then turn to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held this season in Madison, Wisconsin from Feb. 11-14. Carolina has won the last two indoor national titles and five in the last nine seasons.
"Madison does a great job hosting the event," Kalbas said. "To be one of the 16 teams to go to this venue and tournament is just incredible. You never take it for granted."
