ORLANDO - Top seed North Carolina rolled past 16th seed Cal by a 4-0 margin at the NCAA Women's Tennis Team Championship on Sunday night from the USTA National Campus. The win pushes the Tar Heels into the quarterfinals for the 10th time in program history.
North Carolina (29-0) will face Duke on Wednesday with the winner advancing to the Final Four. Carolina holds a 4-1 edge against the Blue Devils in the NCAA Team Championship, and the only previous quarterfinal matchup went to the Tar Heels, 4-3, in 2010.
The Tar Heels got off on the right foot with a pair of victories in doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. No. 34 Alle Sanford and Reilly Tran improved to 19-3 on the year with a 6-2 victory on court three, and No. 2 Sara Daavettila and Cameron Morra sealed the opening point with a similar 6-2 win on court one.
No. 2 Daavettila improved to 8-2 in her career in NCAA singles play with a straight-set victory over Cal's lone ranked player, No. 31 Haley Giavara to increase the UNC lead to 2-0. The ACC Player of the Year registered her 144th career win, second in UNC history.
The match ended soon after with a pair of near simultaneous wins from court five by No. 36 Fiona Crawley and from court four by No. 97 Elizabeth Scotty that proved to be the clincher for the Tar Heels. Crawley is now 28-0 as a freshman, while Scotty improves to 14-3 in her second season with the program but her first chance competing at the NCAA Championship after the 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The win improves head coach Brian Kalbas' career record to 682-182. He has now won 500 more games than he has lost in his brilliant 29-year coaching career.
