Carmichael Arena on Friday: the calm before the storm
ACC Fencing Gets Underway At UNC Saturday
February 26, 2021 | Fencing
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina will host the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Fencing Championships Saturday and Sunday, enjoying the rarity of a home meet while competing for ACC crowns.
Due to Covid protocols there will be no fans in the stands at Carmichael Arena, but the action will be televised both days. On Saturday, the individual semifinals and finals for both men and women will be broadcast live. On Sunday the entirety of the team championships will air. Fans can also follow live results here for Saturday and here for Sunday.
Covid further impacted the competition on Friday, when defending champion Notre Dame was forced to pull out of the event due to Covid protocol within the program. The Fighting Irish had swept the men's and women's titles in five of the past six years and their absence leaves Boston College, Duke and UNC to compete for the 2021 titles.
"For us, it doesn't change our approach to the tournament," UNC coach Matt Jednak said. "We want to go out there and fence strong, fence hard and capitalize on our experience and the work we've put in."
On Saturday, the women's individual tournament begins at 9 a.m. with championship bouts scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The men's tournament begins at 2:30 p.m. with championship bouts at 6.
On Sunday, women's round-robin team competition begins at 9:30 a.m. with UNC vs Boston College. The Tar Heels take on Duke at 11:30 a.m. Men's competition begins at 1 p.m. with the same order of matchups.
UNC is vying for its eighth men's title and its second women's title.
The Tar Heels last won the men's championship in 1980, then there wasn't another conference tournament until 2015, when fencing was reinstated as an ACC sport. Since then, Notre Dame has won five of the six men's titles, with the 2018 trophy going to Duke.
The women's championship was instituted in 2015 and Notre Dame has won all but one – the Tar Heels won the title at home in 2018 in a dramatic fence-off.
