CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina rolled to a 78-68 homecourt win over Virginia Thursday night at Carmichael Arena to improve to 16-6 overall and 6-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball play. Junior Janelle Bailey led the Tar Heels with 23 points and a season-best 17 rebounds in UNC's second double-digit win of the season over the Cavaliers (8-13, 3-7).

Senior Madinah Muhammad scored 17 points and freshman Malu Tshitenge had 16 on 8-for-11 shooting.

The Tar Heels are back in action Sunday with a home game against Clemson. Tipoff at Carmichael is 2 p.m.

The Cavaliers won the jump ball and scored first, but that was their only lead of the game and Carolina was up 21-8 after the first quarter. It was the highest first-quarter total by UNC in ACC play, and the lowest first-quarter total by an ACC opponent.

The Tar Heels stretched the lead to as many as 24 in the second quarter, and they were up by 22 at halftime, 43-21. It marked the first time UNC has led at the half since the last game against Virginia, on Jan. 2 in Charlottesville. Since then, Carolina has trailed at halftime in seven consecutive games, coming back to win on three of those occasions.

They hit their first six shots in the third quarter, going up 56-28 with six minutes remaining in the period. Virginia then went on a 12-0 run and Carolina went five minutes without scoring. That drought ended with 57 seconds to play in the quarter when junior Leah Church got knocked down on a three-point attempt and went to the free throw line for three chances. The first failed to fall, but the other two were good to put UNC up 58-40 at the break. Â

UVA outscored the Tar Heels 28-20 in the fourth quarter, but never got closer than the 10-point final margin.
