#2 UNC Tops ODU To Reach ITA National Indoor Championship

CHAPEL HILL - No. 2 North Carolina women's tennis wrapped up the ITA Kick-off Weekend with a 4-1 win over Old Dominion at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. This victory secures Carolina's spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Feb. 7-10 in Chicago, Ill.
In doubles, Alle Sanford and Makenna Jones won the first set on court two, 6-1. Shortly thereafter, doubles duo Elizabeth Scotty and Cameron Morra secured the opening point for Carolina with a 6-2 win on court three, advancing the score 1-0 in favor of the Tar Heels.
On to singles play, #4 Sara Daavettila won a hard-fought battle against ODU's Brooke Pilkington on court three, winning both of her sets 6-3.
#2 Morra fell short on court one, losing 7-5, 6-3, to #47 Holly Hutchinson, but #8 Alexa Graham won both her sets after trailing 3-0 during her first set. She ultimately won her match, 7-5, 6-1, to get UNC within a point of defeating the Monarchs.
With two wins this weekend, Graham moves into fifth place on the program's singles wins list with 121 career victories. Daavettila remains seventh all-time with 118 wins.
Over on court six, Jones won her first set comfortably, 6-2, but found herself in a tiebreaker during the second set. However, she came out with the win 7-6 (5), to clinch the match for the Tar Heels.
Both Scotty and #36 Sanford did not finish their matches, but Scotty was within a point of winning her third set.
Carolina has reached the championship match at the ITA National Indoor Championship five years in a row, and have won three times in 2013, 2015 and 2018.
Before heading to Chicago, the Tar Heels will host Michigan on Feb. 1 at 11 a.m., and Vanderbilt on Feb. 2 at noon.
