UNC Duo Falls In Singles Quarters At Oracle ITA Masters
September 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. – North Carolina seniors Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham both reached the quarterfinals of the Oracle ITA Masters on Friday.
Both Tar Heel standouts earned quick wins in the second round of singles. No. 7 Daavettila was first off after posting a 6-1, 6-3, victory over No. 104 [9] Jessica Livianu of St. John's. A few minutes later, No. 4 Graham took care of Hawaii's No. 33 Petra Melounova, 6-0, 6-4.
Daavettila faced top seed Natasha Subhash, the top ranked rookie in the country from Virginia, in the quarterfinals. Youth won out over experience as Subhash came away with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Meanwhile, Graham faced third seed and No. 14 Ashley Lahey in the quarters in a rematch of the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship second round bout that went in favor of Graham. This time, Lahey outlasted Graham in a first-set tiebreaker and picked up a decisive, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Earlier in the day, Graham and Texas A&M's Hady Habib grabbed a win over Gui Osorio (San Diego) and Ashley Lahey (Pepperdine) 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles bracket.
The marathon day concluded with Graham and Habib falling in the semifinals to Sven Lah (Baylor) and Natasha Subhash (UVA).
Now in its fifth year, the Oracle ITA Masters features elite NCAA Division I players in 32-player men's and women's singles draws and is the only collegiate event to showcase a mixed-doubles draw. Invitations are sent based on conference affiliation, with each conference having the opportunity to send its top returning player. Mixed doubles are paired based on conference affiliation and at-large selections.
