Next Stop Orlando For Carolina Women's Tennis
May 11, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - The Tar Heels are headed to Orlando after surviving a mighty scare from Oklahoma State in a NCAA Women's Tennis Team Super Regional match from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
In a match that started outdoors and was later moved inside once thunderstorms rolled through central North Carolina, it was junior Makenna Jones that won in comeback fashion to seal a 4-2 victory for Carolina, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation and the second seed in the tournament.
North Carolina (32-1) makes its ninth appearances in the quarterfinals and will face No. 7 seed UCLA on Friday at the USTA National Campus at noon. The Tar Heels will enter the match riding a 23-match winning streak, second longest in program history.
No. 20 Sara Daavettila played about as well as one could in taking down Marina Guinart on court three, 6-2, 6-0, to give Carolina a 2-0 lead over the visiting 15th-ranked Cowgirls.
OSU (21-8) answered right back with a win on court six to notch its first point of the day.
Play was suspended at 4:06 pm for rain and the decision was made shortly there after to move the match indoors and was restarted at 4:25 p.m. with Carolina holding on to a slight 2-1 edge.
UNC's Jessie Aney finished off Sofia Blanco on court five, 6-1, 6-3, to move within a point of victory at 3-1.
But once again, Oklahoma State had an answer to get right back in the match. This time it was Lisa Marie Rioux downing No. 7 Alexa Graham, 6-4, 6-3. That marked just the second dual loss of the season for the first-team All-ACC star.
Court one and four would go to three sets to decide who was moving on to Orlando.
No. 46 Cameron Morra, the ACC's Freshman of the Year, won the first set in her slugfest with Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, but the match was slipping through her fingers as she trailed 4-1 in the third on court four.
On the other side of the indoor facility, No. 5 Jones dropped her first set in a tiebreaker outdoors, but played really well over her final two sets indoors on court one. Jones would close out No. 25 Katarina Stresnakova with a 6-0 shutout in the third and final set of the match.
Simultaneous finishes on courts one and two meant the doubles point would be decided on court three.
Oklahoma State's No. 31 tandem of Blanco and Catherine Gulihur pinned Carolina's second-ranked team of Aney and Graham with just their second loss of the season, coming out victorious on court one, 6-4.
UNC's No. 12 Jones and Morra took care of business on court two by an identical 6-4 score line.
All eyes moved to court three with the match tied 5-5. Carolina's Daavettila and Alle Sanford held serve to go ahead 6-5, and a double fault by the Cowgirls when trailing 15-40 in the game allowed the Tar Heels to stay perfect in doubles for the season.
Carolina finishes the 2019 season a perfect 17-0 at home.
