March 7, 2019 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL - The Tar Heels are back in action this weekend at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, SC. From March 8-11, the 17-team field will navigate the intricate and challenging layout of the Pete Dye designed par-71, 7,000-yard course.
Â
"It is a fantastic course," head coach Jan Mann said. "It is a great test of golf, and we are always excited to go down to Long Cove Club and compete."
Â
The Tar Heels starting five will consist of Mariana Ocano, Kelly Whaley, Ava Bergner, Brynn Walker and Nicole Lu. Jennifer Zhou will compete as an individual this weekend.
Â
Dubbed as the "Greatest Show in Women's Collegiate Golf," the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate hosts 17 teams, which features seven teams that have won this season, five teams ranked in GolfStat's Top 10 and 22 players that are currently ranked in GolfStat's Top 50.
Â
Last year, the Tar Heels finished tied for seventh at the conclusion of the tournament in Hilton Head, S.C. Looking to build off her solid performance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, Mariana Ocano, was the top finishing Tar Heel a year ago in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate where she fired a 1-under-par 70, in the final round to tie for eleventh.
Â
The tournament will begin with on Friday morning, with golfers teeing off on holes No. 1 and No. 10 at 8:30. Zhou will begin the tournament for Carolina, teeing off as an individual on the 10th hole at 8:50 a.m. The starting five will begin their first round at 9:20 a.m. on hole No. 1, where Lu will lead the way.
