UNC Holds Off Georgia Tech in Series Opener, 4-1
March 22, 2019 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – The Tar Heels' four-run third inning would be all they needed to clinch the 4-1 win over Georgia Tech on Friday to open the ACC series at Anderson Stadium.
Heads up base-running by Shayla Thompson and a bases-clearing triple from Megan Dray gave UNC the edge over the Yellow Jackets who mustered a home run in the top of the seventh. Brittany Pickett went the distance for the win, limiting Tech to five hits.
Carolina improves to 16-10 on the season, 6-1 in ACC play while GT falls to 20-12, 3-4 in league competition. The series resumes Saturday at 1 p.m. at Anderson Stadium.
Key Moments

» Campbell Hutcherson opened the four-run inning with a chopper up the middle. After Shayla Thompson checked in as pinch runner, Destiny DeBerry put down a bunt-single with no outs. Following a double play to put two outs on the board, Kiani Ramsey drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Ramsey's ninth stolen base of the season put two in scoring position before Thompson reached home on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded after a walk, Megan Dray blasted a shot to right field driving in three runs.
» Brittany Pickett recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning fifth inning and keep the Yellow Jackets scoreless.
