Tar Heels Ready For Tar Heel Classic Hosted by Suzy Whaley
March 14, 2019 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – While their fellow classmates are soaking in the sun-filled adventures on spring break, the Tar Heels' women's golf team will be competing on the coasts of the Dominican Republic at the Tar Heel Classic hosted by Suzy Whaley. The two-day 54-hole tournament will take place at the Casa de Campo Resort & Villas on Pete Dye's celebrated Teeth of the Dog in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
Immersed in breathtaking views and the breeze of the ocean, fifteen teams will pursue victory on the par-72, 6,140 yards course.
The Tar Heels starting five will consist of Ava Bergner, Brynn Walker, Kelly Whaley, Jennifer Zhou and Nicole Lu.
Since opening in 1970, Teeth of the Dog is widely recognized as the No. 1 course in the Caribbean. The dramatic seaside layout showcases Dye's design hallmarks: railroad ties, vast waste areas, peninsula greens and tees, hand-sculpted putting surfaces and a unique assortment of pot bunkers. The oceanfront holes are astoundingly beautiful, causing Dye to famously quip: "I created 11 holes and God created seven."
The Tar Heels are coming off a seventeenth-place finish at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, which saw freshman Jennifer Zhou tie her lowest collegiate round with an even-par 71.
The tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. ET on Friday morning. At the conclusion of the first round, the golfers will regroup before tackling the second round following immediately. The third and final round of the Tar Heel Classic hosted by Suzy Whaley will take place on Saturday March 16, at 7:30 a.m. ET.
