RALEIGH, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team coasted to a 5-2 victory against Atlantic Coast Conference rival No. 11 NC State on Wednesday afternoon inside J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels won the doubles point, extending their streak to 15-straight matches without dropping the doubles point this season. No. 16 Alexa Graham and Jessie Aney claimed the first win, 6-3, on court one against ranked opponent No. 10 Anna Rogers and Alana Smith of the Wolfpack. No. 4 Cameron Morra and Makenna Jones quickly followed and clinched the doubles point on court two, 6-4.
In singles, No. 27 Cameron Morra, who was named ACC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, remained rock solid in her rookie season with a quick win on court four, 6-0, 6-4.
No. 5 Graham, the three-time and reigning ACC Player of the Week, battled to the end on court three winning 6-2, 7-6 (8). To seal the deal, No. 6 Sara Daavettila came from behind on court two, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, giving the Tar Heels the victory.
No. 2 Jones lost her first set in a tiebreaker, but bounced back and added another team point to the scoreboard 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Carolina improves to 14-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. NC State falls to 10-3, 2-1.
The Tar Heels will be back in action at Cone-Kenfield Center on Friday at 3 p.m. against Notre Dame and on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Louisville.
