March 1, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL – No. 1 North Carolina continued Atlantic Coast Conference women's tennis play with a 6-1 win over No. 44 Notre Dame at Cone-Kenfield Center on Friday afternoon.
The Tar Heels have yet to drop the doubles point this season. Today, the Fighting Irish (10-4, 2-2) almost took that accomplishment away from the number one team in the nation. North Carolina's No. 16 Alexa Graham and Jessie Aney continued their undefeated streak by dominating on court one winning 6-0. When that match finished, the Tar Heels were down on courts two and three.
Alle Sanford and Sara Daavettila lost on court three, 6-3, and the No. 4 ranked duo of Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra were down 4-2, but rallied in a valiant fashion by winning four-straight games to keep the Tar Heels unbeaten in doubles.
The energy moved into singles play with an opening win from No. 27 Morra in straight sets on court four, 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 Jones quickly made it 3-0 Tar Heels after a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court one.
No. 122 Sanford secured the win for the Tar Heels on court six outlasting her opponent 6-1, 6-3. Moments later, Aney wrapped up play on court five and gave the Tar Heels a 5-0 lead, defeating her competitor 6-3, 6-1.
No. 5 Graham showed why she has moved into the top five in the nation in singles play. After today's win, Graham is 12-0 in duals after winning in a tiebreaker in the second set 6-3, 7-6(3) on court three.
No. 6 Daavettila fought hard against opponent Zoe Spence but fell short in the end, resulting in a 4-6, 4-6 loss.
North Carolina (15-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) will be back at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Center against Louisville.
